In a post-apocalyptic America live the Shadows - animals that have been affected and changed by pollution when they were left to die. They have been struggling, alone on the continent of North America, for twenty-five years.
But things are changing.
The humans who fled a quarter of a century earlier want to return to America, because their colonies elsewhere are overcrowded, full of disease and poverty and famine. They have decided to send animals into the heart of the US to see if the area is livable, unaware that the Shadows have survived the long years. Everyone is putting their hope on the test animals, called the Domestics. If the Domestics live, many people will have a home again.
And if they die, mankind's future is uncertain.
